Are backlinks and link building still relevant for your website in 2026?

The Authority SystemYes. Backlinks still matter. But if you are still buying them the way people did in 2015, you are paying for something Google stopped counting a long time ago.

That is the whole answer, and the rest of this post is the detail behind it — what changed, what no longer works, and how to tell whether you actually need links at all.

The honest short answer

Links remain one of the very few things Google can use to judge a site it did not build itself. Everything else — your titles, your speed, your schema, your content — is you marking your own homework. A link from somewhere else is a second opinion

.

Google has never removed links as a signal. What it has done is get much better at telling the difference between a genuine second opinion and a paid one. That distinction is the entire game now.

What actually changed

Three things, and they happened gradually enough that a lot of agencies never noticed:

Volume stopped working. A thousand low-quality links no longer beat ten relevant ones. Google neutralises spam links at scale rather than penalising you for them, which means those links are not hurting you — they are simply doing nothing. You cannot tell the difference on your invoice, only in your rankings.

Relevance started mattering more than raw authority. A link from a genuine site in your industry, with real traffic, is worth more than a link from a high-metric site that has nothing to do with you.

Content quality became the entry fee. Links amplify a page that deserves to rank. They do not rescue one that does not. This is the part most link sellers leave out.

What no longer works

If a supplier offers you any of these, the price is the least of your problems:

Links sold by the thousand, from sites you have never heard of
Private blog networks — Google has been dismantling these for a decade
Comment and forum spam
Reciprocal link schemes dressed up as "partners"
Guest posting on sites that exist only to host guest posts
Anything measured in directory submissions
None of these will get you banned tomorrow. They will just quietly do nothing, month after month, while you keep paying.

What still works

The things that work are slower and harder to sell in bulk:

Editorial links — a real writer on a real site choosing to reference you
Digital PR — a story, a data point or a tool worth covering
Niche relevance — links from the sites your customers actually read
Internal linking — free, entirely in your control, and still the most neglected item on this list
If you want the mechanics — what makes one link worth more than another, the six attributes that decide it, and how tiered link building actually works — that is covered properly in our plain-English guide to what backlinks are.

Do backlinks matter more than content?

No, and anyone who tells you otherwise is selling links.

The accurate version is that they do different jobs. Content decides whether you can rank. Links decide how much Google trusts you to. A brilliant page with no links will often rank on its own for specific, low-competition terms. A thin page with great links will have a short life.

The sites that win are boringly consistent: a page worth linking to, and links pointing at it.

How to tell if you actually need links

Before you spend anything on link building, answer these three:

Is the page technically sound? If it is slow, blocked, or duplicated, links will not save it.

Does it target something people search for? Links cannot create demand.

Who is outranking you, and how strong are their links? If you are behind sites with far better link profiles, that is a link problem. If you are behind sites with worse ones, it is not.

If the answers point to links, that is a link building service conversation rather than a package conversation.

If you are going to buy links, buy them properly

Buying links is not automatically wrong. Buying untraceable links is. There is a real difference between a link you can audit — URL, authority, referring domains, and a report you can check yourself — and a monthly invoice for a number.

We publish our backlink packages in full: four monthly tiers, 15 links a month, priced by authority band, with nothing below DA 40 or DR 40 placed, a plan agreed before anything goes live, and a report listing every placement. It sits inside a wider process we call The Authority System.

But we will also tell you when you do not need them. If your problem is a slow site or a page targeting the wrong term, links are an expensive way to avoid fixing it.

The one-line answer

Backlinks still matter because they are the only outside opinion Google has. What stopped mattering is buying them by the thousand from people who never ask what your business does.
